My Blue Hawaii

Forever 21 Boho Dress Louis Vuitton Neverfull Kendra Scott

I just couldn't help myself with the title of this post. It was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this picture. After living in Hawaii for over 7 years and graduating with my Bachelors from the University of Hawaii, I just had to use Hawaii somewhere in this post. This entire outfit is, well, so me. Exactly what I used to wear daily in Hawaii. "How I long for the day to see your beautiful shores again. To dance on your beaches with the sand between my toes."

If you look, my knee has a cut on it. Mishaps from the 6.5 miles of hiking we did this past weekend. It just happens sometimes.

My darling daughter was picking flowers out of the flowerpot right next to me. She picked the yellow one ("because it went with my outfit") and a purple one that went with her outfit.

Just an FYI on the dress, it needs to be worn with a light slip underneath or camisole dress or nude undies. It is fairly thin material and is unlined. Other than that will make a super swimsuit cover-up!

Wow, what a crazy few weeks its been since I last posted. We've been house hunting nearly every day, plus the kids are ending the school year and we've been trying to find summer camps. Mav and I have been spending much quality time together now that we live near the parentals. They've got 8 years of catching up to do with the grandkids. This allows 'ol Mav and I to catch up on our couple time.

We spent last weekend in the Buffalo River area of Arkansas, hiking and just hanging out. We were somewhat disappointed that we didn't get to float the Buffalo as it flooded along with every other river in Arkansas but as they say when life hands you lemons, you make lemonade. We hiked to some of the most beautiful waterfalls I've ever seen and I've seen every waterfall on the Hawaiian islands! Did I just inject Hawaii again? Yes, I did.

Anyhow, we've got another busy day of house hunting tomorrow but I made Mav take some pictures of me yesterday so I could show you this adorable embroidered shift dress from Forever 21. I'm going to be honest, I have a love/hate relationship with Forever 21. Here's why. I've shopped at Forever 21 since they first opened their doors. Lets just say, that's a long time to keep my attention. That's almost as long as I've shopped at the Limited (since I was 15, yes, 15 years old.) I've been in some stores that look like a tornado just came through. If I see a store like that I turn my butt right around and leave. The Forever 21 near me must be having its up's and downs because the first few times I visited (we just moved here), I walked out before I even began. I don't have 5 hours to pick through every single item in the store to find one that I like. Nope, I'll take my money elsewhere. But this past week, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was mostly organized in that all the new stuff was by the front door and this is where I scored the two sundresses (another post coming soon with a nautical look to include some sails and water!)

I'm a sucker for a shift dress but add the embroidery and I couldn't leave it behind. Plus it was $24. Can't beat that for a dress that will last all summer long!

My favorite singer puts how I feel into the most beautiful words!

"There is no combination of words I could put on the back of a postcard
No song that I could sing, but I can try for your heart
Our dreams, and they are made out of real things
Like a, shoebox of photographs
With sepia-toned loving
Love is the answer,
At least for most of the questions in my heart
Like why are we here? And where do we go?
And how come it's so hard?
It's not always easy and
Sometimes life can be deceiving
I'll tell you one thing, it's always better when we're together"

I'll be honest, I've not worn a onesie, since, well, I was a baby. I've always thought they were for the music festival goer, until I found one that fit. Plus, I'd seen rompers come and go over the last few summers and wondered how long this trend was going to last.

I've tried on many of these in different styles, brands, etc only to be disappointed when it didn't fit in the bottom or the top. I'd have to go up three sizes just so they'd fit in the bottom only to be wayyyy too big on the top. Or I'd have to go up two sizes on the top only to be overly big on the bottom. And let's just say I'm no seamstress. After several failed attempts at finding one that fit, this discouraged girl gave up. That is until I saw this one at Target a few weeks back. I thought I would give it a go again.

I know, I'm glutton for punishment but I just couldn't help myself. This particular trip to Target was to see if I could score one of those Lilly Pulitzer dresses. So imagine my surprise (not really) at NOT finding the Lilly dress but picking up this instead (along with a maxi-dress and this fedora).

Here are the reasons I love this romper:

  1. I like this romper because it's cute, in an un-obnoxious way and when I tried it on it actually fit.
  2. It is so flattering and comfortable, I've worn it too many times to count. That's good in my book because any time I've bought a trendy item I MAY wear it once before its out of style or I get bored with it. Is anyone else that way?
  3. It even survived a whole day and night on Bourbon Street! Sorry, no photos of that unless you count the few I posted on Instagram. After all, what happens on Bourbon, stays on Bourbon! :)

During the hot, steamy, southern, summer months, maxi dresses are my mom-off-duty uniform of choice. I like this style dress because its comfortable and versatile. I can dress them up or down, where them to the pool, laying on the cabana beach side or at the zoo with the kids.

I'm going to admit I was a little skeptical of this dress mainly because it stated it was a bra-top dress and for any woman like me who has plenty in this area, these style tops never work. But this dress and the bra top are comfortable and fit well! I also love this pineapple tote I found at Marshalls for a pop of color! It reminds me of beach days in Hawaii!

I will wear this dress all summer long especially when the hot, humid southern days have arrived. Currently the heat has taken a backseat this week and left us on the cool, overcast side today but, as anyone who's ever lived in the South knows, the heat returns quickly. I will enjoy the cool while it lasts!

Can you tell I'm trying to psyche myself into this cool weather? Needless to say, my morning Starbucks iced Americano has been temporarily replaced with the hot version!

Have a great day!

This is such a cute and versatile shirt. Perfect for those days you just want to throw something casual on and feel like a superstar!!
As I've written before, I'm not a girly-girl. This is one of two items in my closet that contain a floral print, the other being a Jessica Simpson dress I bought for a Spring wedding. After having a daughter and seeing so much floral print in her size, I just couldn't imagine wearing them anymore. Not that I never wore them. I wore them all the time b.k. (before kids) and especially when I lived in Hawaii. You can't walk around anywhere in Hawaii and NOT see floral print. My husband even comments on how little florals I wear. He says "you just don't wear that kind of stuff anymore." Secretly I think he wishes I would. ;) Secretly I wish I lived back in Hawaii where floral prints are always in!
Over the last several years, I've been wearing subtle prints like leopard, which, seriously, is a neutral, ladies! But come Summer and I'm longing for some color! So when I saw this blouse online I thought it would be the perfect floral accent to any closet. I bought a slightly bigger size so it could double as a swimsuit cover-up for my blue and white striped swimsuit. It also pairs well with my boyfriend shorts AND leopard print for Summer!
I know it's been over a week since I posted, but it's been crazy busy here. Our house in Alabama rented (yay!) and the Mavster's been pushing me to look at houses here to get the kids settled this Summer. So when the opportunity to take a mini-vacay away from the house hunt happened, we jumped on it! Mav and I are heading to New Orleans today to spend the weekend in the Big Easy. I'm so excited! I can hardly wait to have a café au lait, peruse the French Market and just take in the city of my youth! Oh and maybe visit Bourbon Street, just once.
Hope you have great plans for this upcoming weekend!

If you are new here, welcome to this blog o' mine! We like to have fun not only with fashion but life!! We talk about all things from the craziness that comes with having kids (plural intended), places this crew of mine travels (sometimes kid-less), daycays (my word for one-day vacations), trying to keep our bodies healthy (as a stay at home/working mom), along with a few healthy recipes we come up with on the fly. We act silly, make fun of ourselves and always, always laugh through it all.

For the last 13 years, I've been an Army helicopter pilots' spouse hence the former blog name armylifeaviatorwife. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Hawaii with a BBA in 2008. My husband and I will celebrate our 15th anniversary in July and our kids are 8 and 4. Mav retired from the Army not a month ago and is now currently training for helicopter firefighting. I do feel blessed to spend my days with my kids while they are young.

I'm so sorry ladies. Will you forgive me? I've had such a nice vacation from this little blog, I'd almost forgotten about it. Nah, not really. It's always on my mind and in my heart and I feel rejuvenated just sitting here thinking of what to say. I hope you checked out the weekly happenings in my life on Instagram. If you haven't followed me yet, its a must!! You will love it. Check me out @sunshinesequinsblog. Don't forget to leave me a comment! I love to hear from all of you!

Let me tell you, over the last month, I came so close to changing my middle name to "transition".  Not pretty, I know, but that is what I felt like the last several weeks. I've driven from Alabama to Arkansas with two kids and five cats. I've driven back to Alabama to finalize all the moving stuff and watch as people packed all my things in boxes. I've taken a daycay (my word for a day trip) to the beach one last time before we left our home in Alabama. I've then driven back to Arkansas with two kids. Enrolled my child and settled him in school. Changed doctors, dentists and a few pull ups. I've flown to Montana to see Mav at his new job and check out the local area for a possible move, i.e. Summer vacay house hunt! Holla ya'll! Then back to Arkansas again to get everyone settled and start my new job. Phew! As I said, the name of the game is change. We could be here all day with me dramatizing my life stuff.

I'm feeling the need to take a vacay from all the change though and get into what I know and love, my comfort zone: fashion, style, street chic, whatever you wanna call it. It keeps me grounded, excited for a new day and ready to hit the pavement running (which, btw, I've picked up again).

I'll begin by saying the outfit in this post was photographed over a month ago. Yep, that's how crazy life's been. My only access to the web has been through my phone and various hotel wi-fi's. Ugh. Hopefully that's all in the past. For this month, anyway.

For hubby, things have really changed. He decided to pass up one opportunity for another one placed in his lap with a company he truly adores doing a job he's always wanted-heavy lift helicopter firefighting or (from what I've gathered in convos) longlining. We are really blessed as a family. While this particular job will have him away from the family for weeks, it's doing something he truly, deeply loves. That is worth the separation. Let me think....hmmm? I remember thinking this same thing when he got the news his unit was to deploy one more time. But with love comes sacrifice.

All Things Stripe-y: Side Zip Sweater

J Crew Side Zip Sweater, H&M Boots, Treasure and Bond Skinny Jeans, Rebecca Minkoff Quilted Affair

As many of you know if you read this little bloggity blog of mine often, my little family is going through a bit of a change. Mav's retiring from the Army and we have spent the last several months trying to wait as patiently as possible for our house to sell, job plans to fall in place and a myriad of other stresses. Its that time. Decision time. Moving time. Ugh. I've successfully avoided this issue for as long as I possibly can. Now its time to put my feet on the ground and get running.

With all this in mind, the waiting presented two dilemma's. First, we didn't know where Mav was going to get a job. Just because your a several times over, combat proven, former Army helicopter instructor pilot with several thousand flight hours under your belt, doesn't mean you just walk into a civi job. No matter the qualifications, ratings, flight hours or certifications you have. Second, where are me and the kids going to set up home while he's working. We had plan a, plan b and plan c worked. Plan c was he gets a job where he is gone most of the time. The point of retiring from military life was that he wasn't going to be gone anymore, right? God willing, something will open up for him in the next few months that doesn't require the long distance relationship. And, if not, this is nothing new to us. We are used to it. Heck, the first 9 months of our relationship were long distance.

So, with all that, please forgive me if my activity on here for the next several weeks is hit or miss. Now you know why. Drop me a comment on here or check me out on Instagram! During all the mêlée that will ensue in the next month, I will attempt to post pics on IG with my currently wearing outfits of the day or other crazy happenings @sunshinesequinsblog. I may even do a photo shoot in a fantastic new place that might have snow!!! I know you're excited. I'm excited, too!

Don't forget to go over to shopstyle.com to get shoppable emails of all the lovely outfits on here. But you have to sign up first and then like my Instagram photos with the shopstyle.it tag! It's super-fun and super-easy! I love it!

Anyway, back to fashion. Remember, my great distraction? I'm going to talk a little about my obsession with nautical stripes and why I love all things stripe-y. For the last few seasons, I've been slowly adding striped clothing to my closet. Stripes are chic, sophisticated and casual at the same time. These are my three rules all wrapped up in one pretty package. Since January, I've been on a red stripe buying frenzy!!! Well, not really. I only bought two things buuuut these two things are making my Spring transition so lovely I can't stand it!

I saw this J Crew sweater while perusing their website a few weeks back and I couldn't resist it!!! The red stripes, the side zip details.....say it ain't so!  I was sold. It was love at first sight. I had to have it. You know me, I don't like spending a whooole lot of money on any one piece of clothing unless I think it has staying power. This one definitely does. I will wear it well into Spring and then bring it out for a Fall pick me up on those dreary days! What really sold me on this sweater was two things: its a heavier, yet lightweight sweater and the zippers!! Oh, how I love the details. A little extra drama never hurts, especially when I'm talking about fashion!

Now I'm going to talk your ear off about my new favorite brand of skinny jeans: Treasure and Bond brand. I love this brand not only because the skinnies hug and lift this bootie-licious babe in all the right places but it's also a "gives back" brand. I love brands that give back and especially ones that give to organizations that help empower girls and women. And with saying all that, they are even under $60!

Obviously I was avoiding face shots for this post. I don't know why. Maybe its because I'd been crying because it was Valentines Day and my daughter ran all the way across the soccer field at the park to give me a flower she picked just for me. She gave me a hug and said in the sweetest voice you ever heard "I wuv you Mommy."

Sniff, sniff.

I love this little munchkin.

Just so you know, this moment is so rare to ever get caught on camera because I'm usually the one with behind the camera! I have great shots of my husband and various other people with my children. Its a bit sad because I think that no one will ever replace a mother in a child's life.

As adults they will look at photos of themselves when they were a child and remember the feelings and the moments that created their life. All those lost moments in the psyche that make a person who they are. Those things you may not remember but are always on the surface of every decision and emotion you have. This is why photos are so important to me. I may not be an artsy craftsy mom who has a scrapbook with each moment detailed but if nothing else, my daughter will always have this picture to know, without a doubt, the love her mother has for her. I pray she never forgets.

Can I get an amen from all the moms who get this?
